| The most important theological book ever to come off a
printing press (other than the Bible itself). These unusual
printings from 1641 are from John Foxe's "Book
of Martyrs". Fox was priest of Salisbury
Cathedral who wrote of the persecution of early
European and Reformation Martyrs. His writings were
used a powerful weapon in the struggle between
the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church.
Early American Colonists, many of whom had fled
religious persecution, identified with the book's
theme, contributing to its popularity in America.
These leaves contain graphic
woodcuts showing the murder of those who stood up to the
tyrany of the Roman and Anglican Churches.
One of the most striking
pieces of religious antiquity you can
own.
This page
contains a large woodcut of twenty-two "godly and faithfull
Christians. . . prisoned together in one band . . .", Measures
approximately 8 1/2" x 13 1/2".
