The Western monastaries
of the Middle Ages were peaceful retreats for scholars and were
the chief centers of Christian piety and learning. Within the
abbey walls were the abbey church, the dormitory, the dining hall and the guest house for travelers.
Time was spent in the work of a self-sufficient society,
with idle time spent in prayer, transcribing religious material
and spiritual singing or chanting.
The chant, was an
unharmonized melody, with texts taken from the bible, the mass,
and hymns. Under the reign of Pope Gregory I, the chants were put
on parchment in a large-leaved book called a Codex. The parchment
manuscripts were painstakingly done by hand in black and red ink,
with occassional illuminated letters in, red, green, blue, gold, and white.
