Illuminated Manuscripts
on parchment 12th - 16th Century

The Western monastaries of the Middle Ages were peaceful retreats for scholars and were the chief centers of Christian piety and learning. Within the abbey walls were the abbey church, the dormitory, the dining hall and the guest house for travelers. Time was spent in the work of a self-sufficient society, with idle time spent in prayer, transcribing religious material and spiritual singing or chanting.

The chant, was an unharmonized melody, with texts taken from the bible, the mass, and hymns. Under the reign of Pope Gregory I, the chants were put on parchment in a large-leaved book called a Codex. The parchment manuscripts were painstakingly done by hand in black and red ink, with occassional illuminated letters in, red, green, blue, gold, and white.
