1855 Indian Hostilities Congressional report on a message from U.S. President Franklin Pierce transmitting A letter from the Secretary of War (ed. Jefferson Davis) on the subject of Indian hostilities. Details an actual estimated counting of Sioux, Black-feet, and other nations in the U.S. as well as a general prevailing fear. Includes a letter from an Indian agent, in part: "Place yourself in my situation,. . .with a war party of seventy-one stout, athletic, blood-thirsty black-feet warriors, travelling after you for days . . .". 1856 Indian Disturbances Congressional Report transmitting A communication from the Secretary of the Interior, in relation to Indian disturbances in the Territories of Oregon and Washington. The Oregon Trail has just brought settlers West and certain tribes are determined to prevail against the invaders. Tells of attack on Seattle as well as other unrest among some of the more peaceful tribes. A terrific insight into an important part of Western history. 10 pp. |

A wonderful 39-page report containing actual dialogue of Sioux leaders as they conducted the Council of March 1, 1856. Also contains several letters from Jefferson Davis, then Secretary of War. A terrific look at a historical moment as it actually happened. |
