| Confederate States of America CIVIL WAR BONDS |
A major flaw of the Confederacy was that of not utilizing its tax base to the extent it should have. Instead, it relied on loans, both foreign and domestic, and the sale of war bonds which failed to raise the amount of money expected.
There were 13 official issues of Confederate States of America(C.S.A.) Bonds. All bonds were printed with coupons attached as these coupons were cut off one at a time every six months and redeemed at the CSA Treasury. All bonds are individually signed, while the coupons can sometimes be printed. The ink used is generally corrosive and usually has impregnated into the paper over the last 130 years.
